The Journey Begins!!

The Journey Begins!

Dear Friend,

It is with great joy that I share with you what is on my heart and an exciting new adventure that awaits.  On January 12th, 2012, I will be moving to Recife, Brazil to work with a Christian Relief/Missionary Organization called YWAM – Youth With A Mission.  I will be there for 6 months attending University of the Nations to learn how to work with at-risk youth.  We will also be doing outreach and be working in the favelas (slum areas) and with the children who live on the streets, some as young as 5 years old.  In addition, we will be teaching teens life skills and leadership skills.  Lastly, we will be working with some local orphanages and hospitals.  This is a wonderful opportunity that I have been moving towards for years.

Since I became a Christian in 2003, I have had the opportunity to travel to the Middle East, Brazil, Haiti, Mexico, Africa, and India for mission trips.  In the past few years, it has become harder and harder to come back from these trips.  Each time I leave, I feel like I leave a piece of my heart there.

Psalm 82:3 says to defend the cause of the weak and orphaned and to uphold the rights of the oppressed.  There is a line in a movie in which a doctor runs a hospital/orphanage.  At night he closes the door to the boys’ room and says, “Good-night you Princes of Maine, you Kings of New England.”  The doctor didn’t see them as orphans but as kings and princes. I believe that orphaned children will survive and even thrive when someone believes in them and invests in them, when they come to believe their lives have great worth.  I am excited to help these children see their worth.

Upon completion of my training in Brazil, I hope to move to Haiti and start an orphanage/school/clinic/camp there.  And then do the same in India.  And in Africa.  With God, nothing is impossible.  So I am dreaming BIG!!

Thank you for being a part of my life.  I would love to see you one last time at my Sending Off/Going Away party on Saturday, Jan. 7th at Scottsdale Bible Church at 7pm.

Also, visit http://www.joyaroundtheworld.blogspot.com/ to keep up with my travels/work. I’m also on Facebook.

And please keep me in your prayers.  I will need it!  God bless you always!  Love, Joy Daugherty
